Marvel to Film Netflix Series Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist in New York

Get ready, New York - Some Marvel superheroes will soon be roaming your streets! The Wrap is reporting that the upcoming Marvel/Netflix TV series Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist, will all be filming in New York. A source has told The Wrap that Disney CEO Bob Iger and Governor Andrew Cuomo will announce the plan today in Times Square and that "the state has carved out tax incentives valued at around $4 million to accommodate the needs of the massive multi-character series."

In Marvel Comics, New York City has traditionally been where a huge amount of the Marvel superheroes are based out of, including the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and Spider-Man. However, no Marvel Studios production has been primarily shot in New York - even films like The Avengers and Captain America, which had many scenes there, only filmed a few key exteriors in the city. [The Amazing Spider-Man 2 just shot almost entirely in New York, but that of course is made by Sony, not Marvel.]

The Wrap says that Marvel will be filming "around 60 one hour-long TV episodes" in New York. It's known that the initial commitment is for 13 episodes each for each series. It's not clear as yet if the New York deal/commitment would also include production of The Defenders series in the city, which will team-up all four characters, but it seems likely it will.

Per usual, Marvel is being very secretive on the details of these series, so far only officially announcing Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lost) will guide the Daredevil series - though it also has been revealed that Melissa Rosenberg (Dexter, Twilight) is heading up Jessica Jones.

Daredevil will be the first of the series to debut, set for sometime in 2015. Knowing how Marvel like to lay the groundwork for what's to come, it was notable when Seagate Prison -- heavily tied into the history of Luke Cage in the comics -- was the setting for the new All Hail the King short, starring Ben Kingsley, that is available on the Thor: The Dark World Blu-ray.
