Amazing Spider-Man 2 Producers and Director Marc Webb Talk Venom and Sinister Six Movies

Filmmaker Marc Webb, director of The Amazing Spider-Man films, and series producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad recently opened up about how the characters of Venom and The Sinister Six would be handled in their respective spin-off movies. They also talked about the creative team that will bring them to the screen.

We’ve known for some time that ASM2 writers Alex Kurtzman, Jeff Pinkner, and Bob Orci would return to co-write Venom along with Ed Solomon, and that Kurtzman will also direct. We also knew Drew Goddard is writing and likely directing Sinister Six. An interesting detail in the interview, however, is how Tolmach considers them all part of the same team, such that Goddard has been invited to participate in the sculpting of the Amazing Spider-Man arc to ensure symmetry and continuity.

The most interesting stuff deals with the question on everybody’s mind regarding these villain-centric movies: how true to character can Venom and The Sinister Six be if they’re the protagonists of their respective films? Building on what Orci has said in the past, Arad explains, “With Marvel characters, the villains are victims of circumstance. If you look at our villains, none of them were born like that. Our villains are nice and complex and in the world of film writing you can play with that, you can make some wonderful things out of it. The Spider-Man universe has amazing villains, they are all character driven.”

Taking it a step further, Arad makes reference to Venom’s heroic side as seen in his solo comic Venom: Lethal Protector, which was the first time the character was portrayed as anything other than purely villainous. Could that also signal the Venom movie, like the comic series, will take place on the west coast?

Of course, all those ideas are still a long way from the screen. In the meantime, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 his theaters in the U.S. on May 2.
