Comic Book Reviews for March 12, 2014

It is a week of high stakes and big reveals, but the clear winner is Batman #29 by the two comic book titans known as Scott "Iron" Snyder and "Battling Greg" Capullo.

There was also an emotional send-off for Nightwing, another strong showing for Superman/Wonder Woman, and a 100-page Batman comic. Plus, if you've been wondering just who or what the Justice League 3000 are, this week's issue has your answer!

On the Marvel side of things, X-Men Legacy reached its somber series finale, Hawkguy nailed another bullseye, Captain Marvel was relaunched but not rebooted, and we got our long-awaited look at the followup to the nail-biting Avengers Arena called Avengers Undercover.

To top it off, there was a crazy cliffhanger in The Walking Dead, a great new kick-off to a Ninja-centric story in Unity #5, and a strong debut for David Lapham's Stray Bullets: Killers #1.

How did this week fare for you? Take to the comments to let us know what comics got you feeling the good feels this week!

DC COMICS

Batgirl #29

STK633951

Written by Gail Simone | Art by Fernando Pasarin

"After the emotional resonance of previous story arcs, Batgirl's current vampire-driven arc is a bit of a letdown. That isn't to say that it lacks any merit -- Batgirl #29 is, by turns, humorous and heartbreaking, but writer Gail Simone set the bar high enough in past issues that good just doesn't hold a candle to great. That being said, if you're a Strix fan (and you should be), this book is definitely worth the read." -Melissa

Batman #29

STK633953

Written by Scott Snyder | Art by Greg Capullo

"To quote Sir Isaac Newton (and to bastardize his Third Law of Motion), for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. For Bruce, this means that the results of his choices have been disproportionately tragic. As a boy, an impulsive decision to confront his fear is what leads him down a circuitous path that ends with the untimely deaths of his parents. Batman has long been an iconic embodiment of the idea that human beings are inextricably shackled to our pasts. This lesson is hammered into Bruce's already vulnerable consciousness when it is revealed that Doctor Death, who's in cahoots with the Riddler, has been driven past the point of despair because of a personal tragedy brought about by Bruce's actions. Part of growing up is learning that the choices we make affect other people, sometimes even more than they affect us, and the realization that dawns on Bruce as the full scope of his actions is laid bare before him is a heartbreaking (and extreme) example of such a revelation." -Melissa

Justice League 3000 #4

STK634009

Written by Keith Giffen & J.M. DeMatteis | Art by Howard Porter

"Justice League 3000 #4 is one of those proverbial "all your questions are finally answered" issues. Writers Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis finally establish just who and what these apparent Justice League clones are and how they came to be. The problem with comics like this is that they tend to go overboard on the exposition as the explanation pours forth, and that's definitely a problem this comic suffers from at times." -Jesse

Justice League of America #13

STK634012

Written by Matt Kindt | Art by Tom Derenick & Eddy Barrows

"Justice League of America hasn't emerged as the vital Forever Evil tie-in that Justice League has been, but at least it offered a great character-building platform for Stargirl and Martian Manhunter. That quality is more evident than ever in this final tie-in chapter. Whatever relevance this storyline had is greatly diminished by a disappointing ending. But at least Stargirl has plenty of great moments along the way." -Jesse

Legends of the Dark Knight 100 Page Spectacular #2

By Various

"DC must not have been thrilled with the print sales for its digital-first Legends of the Dark Knight series. The single issues quietly stopped at #13, and the trades cut out after two less than comprehensive volumes. The Legends of the Dark Knight 100-Page Spectacular format seems intended as a cheap, efficient way of collecting the remainder of the digital series in print form. So with this second issue, fans are getting a haphazard assortment of stories from the middle of Legend of the Dark Knight's run. It's a decent value for those who just want a Batman fix and prefer print to digital, but that's about it." -Jesse

Nightwing #29

STK634017

Written by Kyle Higgins | Art by Russell Dauterman

"The cover of Nightwing #29 shows a bruised and battered Dick Grayson facing down seemingly every bad guy he's ever encountered. I exaggerate, but the image is a fitting summation of the issues dealt with in the book -- we are shaped by our pasts, especially by our tragedies. While there's technically one issue left of the series, that's more a numerical technicality. Nightwing #29, by writer Kyle Higgins and artist Russell Dauterman, is the conclusion the character deserves. While not every unanswered question is answered (an impossible task considering the circumstances), the series is given a heartfelt and impactful finale. If you haven't read the issue yet, be forewarned: it's almost impossible to discuss it without verging into spoiler territory." -Melissa

Superman/Wonder Woman #6

STK634041

Written by Charles Soule | Art by Tony Daniel

"Throughout the years, many writers have struggled to write the adventures of both Superman and Wonder Woman. While some have found these two tough to crack, to the unfortunate detriment of their respective books, Charles Soule has shown that he’s got what it takes to write both characters with apparent ease. Superman/Wonder Woman #6 continues to do justice to both characters by mixing elements of an engrossing romance with that of a non-stop action extravaganza." -Mike
