It seems as though the Star Wars Episode VII script was written in a galaxy far, far away, considering all the secrecy surrounding the film’s casting. All we know so far is that Adam Driver is likely to play the film’s antagonist (though we don't know who that villain is yet).
As for the lead role, sources have told Variety that Edward Speleers (Downton Abbey), John Boyega (Attack the Block), Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad), and theater actors Matthew James Thomas and Ray Fisher are up for the part. The same sources have told the site that the actors have "moved to the top of the list in recent weeks,” despite some reports that the search is ongoing.
According to Variety, the relatively fresh faces are competing to play a Jedi apprentice. The site notes that Michael Arndt’s first draft of the script was said to focus on Han Solo and Princess Leia’s children. However, J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan’s revision places the offspring in a more peripheral role, so they can then “surround the less-familiar actor with more recognizable stars for supporting parts,” such as classic Star Wars actors Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford.
Apparently, the casting delay is also due to the question of whether or not the filmmakers should diversify the cast, which explains the earlier tests for David Oyelowo (Jack Reacher) and Michael B. Jordan (the upcoming Fantastic Four’s Human Torch).
Filming this summer, Star Wars: Episode VII hits theatres on December 18, 2015.
