Warner Bros. has tapped Rooney Mara to play Tiger Lily in Pan, the studio's upcoming origin tale based on Peter Pan. She reportedly beat out Lupita Nyonog'o and Adele Exarchopoulos for the role.
While the character is typical portrayed as Native American, Variety notes that "the world being created is multi-racial/international" and that Pan's Tiger Lily is "a very different character than previously imagined."

Set in World War II, the story follows an orphaned Peter Pan who's kidnapped by pirates and taken to Neverland. Once there, Peter attempts to save the isle from the infamous Captain Blackbeard.
In addition to Mara, Pan's cast includes Hugh Jackman and Garrett Hedlund, with Joe Wright directing. Meanwhile, the studio is still looking to fill the role of Peter, who is supposed to be 10 to 12 years old.
Pan hits theaters on July 17, 2015.
