Magnus: Robot Fighter #1 Review

STK634462Magnus: Robot Fighter has a long, complicated history. This is a character who has been around for 50 years and jumped from publisher to publisher. He's had several relaunches in those five decades. This new volume is another reboot; a fresh start and a great place to jump into a very cool world. It's difficult to tell what direction this new series will take after only one issue, but it's off to great start. No skirt though, which is a little sad.

Fred Van Lente writes Magnus as a man displaced from his normal life. The intro showcases a sweet, small town life that is quickly blown to pieces. We don't know exactly what is going on, or how our lead ends up in a robot populated metropolis. Van Lente keeps the story moving fast and the answers you want are just out of your grasp. We do get a brief glimpse of Magnus' robot-fu as he teaches a few security drones a lesson in human understanding. One issue in and this book is already awesome.

The art provided by Corey Smith is top notch. The opening has a quaint, rural feel. A few pages later, we are treated to a sprawling city. He never skimps on detail, fleshing out every character, building and robot. The best scene is the aforementioned robot beat down. It's exploding with energy, Magnus' hand flying towards us as he punches a robot's head. It's a bit of a shame that we don't get more action in this issue, because it's clear that Smith excels at it. Hopefully, as Magnus: Robot Fighter continues, we'll get more awesome pages like this.
