Amazon Prime Gets Its First Price Increase in Nine Years

The cost of Amazon Prime will soon be $99 per year—up from $79 a year—making it the first time the service receives a price jump since it was introduced nine years ago. Amazon Student Prime will be going from $39 to $49 per year as well.

Existing members should already see an email in their inbox from Amazon indicating when the increased price will take effect on their account, as well as the following message:

Even as fuel and transportation costs have increased, the price of Prime has remained the same for nine years. Since 2005, the number of items eligible for unlimited free Two-Day Shipping has grown from one million to over 20 million. We also added unlimited access to over 40,000 movies and TV episodes with Prime Instant Video and a selection of over 500,000 books to borrow from the Kindle Owners' Lending Library.

According to CNET, existing subscribers with a renewal date prior to April 17, 2014 will only be charged $79 to continue using the service for the next year. For new customers, the increased price will be effective in 7 days, so if you've been eyeing the premium service but have yet to enroll you may want to act fast.
