Guardians: Karen Gillan on Nebula and Gamora's Catfight

While promoting her new horror film Oculus at SXSW this week, Karen Gillan (Doctor Who) offered some insight into her next big role playing the villainous Nebula in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

With the release of the movie's trailer a few weeks ago, fans got a good sense of Guardians' lighthearted tone, and Gillan affirmed that in a recent interview with MTV News. "I just think it's a new direction for Marvel, it's really, really funny," she said. "It's not taking itself seriously at all. It's tongue in cheek. And just to see people be excited about that new tone is cool."

However, despite the fact that Guardians is funny (as is Gillan herself), the character she plays is no-nonsense for the most part. "Okay, so Nebula does not find herself funny," Gillan confessed, laughing. "I find her hilarious. But she can't find herself hilarious, that's not scary."

In the trailer, we also got a brief glimpse of Gillan in full makeup, ready for action, and it looks like Nebula will be getting into a scrape with Zoe Saldana's green-skinned Gamora. "Yeah, there's a big girlie fight sequence, but it's not that girlie," Gillan confirmed. "They made sure there weren't any nice pirouettes or anything like that."

But as Gillan noted, Saldana might have had the upper hand when it came to the fighting. "She's really experienced in the physical stuff, she was a ballerina," Gillan continued. "She's really amazing at all of that stuff. She barely required any rehearsal. She was like, 'I can do this.' I required two months of rehearsals every day that I wasn't shooting, because I looked like spaghetti when I started."

In regards to Nebula's ties to Gamora, Gillan concluded, "This [fight] is the integral one for my character, because it's not just a physical battle. Their relationship goes very deep, and there's a huge history between them. So there's a lot more to it than just the physical."

Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters on August 1.
