Bates Motel is Back for Season 2

Bates Motel is back Monday night, as Season 2 of the twisted tale of Norma Bates and her son Norman begins.

Carlton Cuse, who executive produces Bates Motel with Kerry Ehrin, told me, "I'm very excited about Bates Motel: Season 2. I think we see these characters cover a lot of ground over the 10 episodes this season. That was really rewarding as storytellers for Kerry Ehrin and I. I think it's a journey that seems sunny at first, but it has wonderful other dimensions and qualities that are revealed."

Cuse elaborated, "It sort of seems at the beginning of the season that Norma and Norman are going to get the life that they've always wanted in this town, which makes what actually happens I think all the more engaging and poignant. I feel like the show's really finding its legs in the second season. Our cast is a dream, and it was really fun doing this season of the show."

We know Norman Bates is destined to end up as the psychologically disturbed killer we met in Psycho and when I asked Cuse if they had certain goalposts they were looking to reach along the way to chart his journey, he remarked, "There's a lot of evolution as you start telling a story, but yes, there are steps to his journey that ultimately lead to some version of that character that we know from the movie - although we're not going to literally duplicate that. We're taking him down the same paths. So yes, this season represents one chunk, and the next season will represent another chunk. The goal is to just make the story of getting him through those sections as entertaining and compelling as we can. I think that we definitely succeeded for Season 2."
