Update: Thief's publisher, Square Enix, has confirmed the layoffs, and provided IGN with the following statement:
“Yes it is true we’ve let 27 people go today, unfortunately it’s something that every major studio has to do sometimes in order to ensure you have the right set up for current and future projects. It’s never a nice thing to do but we are genuinely trying to offer as much support as much as we can. We’re trying to re-locate as many people as possible into other roles here or at our other studios and we’ve been in touch several studios in Montreal to arrange a career day for those affected by this. We’re very thankful for all their hard work and we sincerely wish them well.”
Our original story is below.
The developer behind Thief – Montreal Eidos – has experienced a round of layoffs. Word comes by way of Kotaku, which indicates that as many as 50 people have been let go.
“Multiple sources” have spoken to Kotaku on the matter, though the number of employees let go is still unknown, with “one source [saying] 30-50; another [saying] 20+.”
Thief experienced a lengthy development period – it was announced as Thief 4 way back in 2009 after being teased for a couple of months – and wasn’t initially designed for next-gen consoles. All was quiet for years until the game was re-revealed last year.
We didn’t care much for Thief either on current gen consoles or next-gen consoles.
We’ve reached out to Eidos for comment. Our very best goes out to all of those affected by this unfortunate news.
