Frictional Games has revealed a new teaser trailer for its next horror game, SOMA, along with an update on its development goals.
"We are currently about a week away from the alpha of the game," says Frictional's creative director Thomas Grip on the PlayStation blog. "This video showcases a few in-game scenes along with fresh voice work. Our hope is to give you a taste of the feel and atmosphere that SOMA will have. It also contains a few clues on what the game’s story will be about."
He estimates that the final game length will clock in at around eight hours.
Frictional has a history in horror games, having developed the Penumbra series as well as Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
SOMA is a new step in storytelling for the developer, though. Grip admits that the supernatural fantasy settings of the previous games let the developer get away with just about any kind of plot twist by saying, "because, magic," and he recognises that that won't work in SOMA's realistic sci-fi world.
"It’s important that SOMA is constantly drenching the player in storytelling," Grip explains. "We need to make sure there is always a red thread of narrative running through the game. We don’t want you to say 'Oh, here comes a puzzle section', but to constantly feel as if you are being told an interactive story."
Going by the trailer above, do you think they're succeeding so far?
SOMA is due for release PC and PS4 in the far-away, distant future of 2015. Frictional advise that they will reveal a big secret about SOMA "sometime soon."
