Apple's CarPlay Brings iOS to Autos

As expected, Apple has finally announced the initial rollout of its "iOS in the car" system, CarPlay. New vehicles sporting the iPhone integration will be announced from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo later this week.

"CarPlay has been designed from the ground up to provide drivers with an incredible experience using their iPhone in the car," said Apple's Greg Joswiak. "iPhone users always want their content at their fingertips and CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction."

CarPlay will show up as an update to iOS 7 for the iPhone 5 and later models. Once connected via Lightning cable, drivers can use Siri to receive and send messages, use a dashboard touch-screen to interact with apps, or pull up directions via Maps.

Some third-party apps will also work with CarPlay, such as Spotify and iHeartRadio, but it seems apparent other apps will become compatible down the road. Other auto manufacturers, including General Motors, Ford, and Toyota will also feature CarPlay in future vehicles. Strangely, it appears Chrysler is the only major auto manufacturer not on the list.
