Blizzard is preparing to kick off an alpha test for Heroes of the Storm that a small number of players will be able to participate in, the developer announced today.
This test is being called a "technical alpha" and is described as being a very early step in the development process. Much of the game is still in the works, and as such, the "very limited number of players" who are allowed in will likely see unfinished elements, including sounds and graphics.
The purpose of this alpha is to allow Blizzard to "better examine how our infrastructure and tech will function across a much broader spectrum of machines and connection types. What’s more, inviting external Alpha testers will allow us to take a closer look at our hardware needs so that we can be absolutely sure we’re able to support the entire Heroes population as the community grows."
This isn't the first opportunity for the public to play Heroes of the Storm, as it was playable for BlizzCon 2013 attendees, but it will be the first chance for fans to play it at home on their own computers.
The initial number of players allowed into the alpha will be small, increasing as time goes on. Blizzard will be sending out invitations by email, and you can improve your odds of getting in by ensuring that Heroes of the Storm is among the beta tests you've indicated you're interested in on your Battle.net profile. Initially, only those in the United States will be allowed in; Blizzard does not yet have a timeline for when it will begin inviting international players.
Once the alpha has begun, there will be no restrictions on what players can share, so expect to see videos, screenshot, and details to begin circulating the web once it's live.
