According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brooks will write the screenplay for The Harlem Hellfighters, which he will first release as an original graphic novel (with art by Caanan White) on April 1. After Earth’s Caleb Pinkett and James Lassiter will produce the film for Overbrook Entertainment.

The Harlem Hellfighters is a true story about the U.S. Army’s 369th infantry division in World War I, which was composed completely of African-American soldiers. According to THR, the graphic novel chronicles, “their journey from the enlistment lines in Harlem to the training camp at Spartanburg, South Carolina, to the trenches of Europe." Before returning home as heroes, the group was plagued with racial discrimination.

THR says the unit portrayed in the graphic novel, "spent more time in combat than any other American unit, never losing a foot of ground to the enemy, or a man to capture, and went on to win countless decorations.”

As a comic book author, Mac Brooks previously wrote The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks, the mini-series GI: Joe Hearts & Minds, and most recently, The Extinction Parade.

Sony’s film adaptation of The Harlem Hellfighters doesn’t yet have a release date.
