West Side Story is a classic stage musical that went on to be adapted to the screen in 1961 by Robert Wise. It's such a classic that Fox protected the license from remakes and spin-offs for decades, flying in the face of Hollywood convention. However, a lot of closed doors are quick to open when your name is Spielberg.
According to Deadline, Fox has finally "unlocked" West Side Story for a potential remake by Steven Spielberg. It should be noted that the legendary director of classics such as Jaws and E.T. has reportedly done nothing more than simply state his interest in possibly remaking the film. Absolutely nothing is set. However, the prospect of working with Spielberg apparently pleases Fox enough to get the ball rolling for him.
West Side Story was, at its time, a modern retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. The film version follows Maria (Natalie Wood) and Tony (Richard Beymer), who fall in love despite having affiliations with rival New York City gangs (the Sharks and the Jets, respectively). The musical introduced beloved songs such as "Tonight," "Somewhere," and "I Feel Pretty."
