We've Seen 20 Minutes of Edge of Tomorrow

Tom Cruise sci-fi flick Edge of Tomorrow hits screens in a couple of months, but director Doug Liman previewed 20 minutes of footage from the film in London earlier today.

Based on the novel All You Need is Kill by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, the futuristic film takes place in the aftermath of an alien invasion, and stars Cruise as a soldier who becomes trapped in a fatal time loop. So think Groundhog Day meets Independence Day with a dash of Source Code thrown in for good measure.

For a detailed account of what we saw, check out the video below…

Liman also participated in a Q&A at the preview, and the following are the highlights of what he had to say…

Liman was attracted to the fact that the film fulfills Hollywood's appetite for a "big" movie but is also an original concept.

Tom Cruise plays something of a coward in the movie, and we'll get to hear him squeal. Several times.

The highlight of the shoot for the director was getting to land a huge military helicopter in Trafalgar Square.

Liman never intended to call the movie All You Need is Kill, and simply referred to is as AYNIK on-set until they came up with a better title.

Emily Blunt was the only actress he ever considered for the role of Rita Vrataski.

Principal photography took place in and around London, and the city's changeable weather made shooting a movie that features the same day over and over again something of a challenge.

As well as action, the film is filled with humour, with Liman calling Cruise "a great comedic actor."

Edge of Tomorrow his screens worldwide at the end of May and start of June.

Chris Tilly is the Entertainment Editor for IGN in the UK and previously previewed the book on which Edge of Tomorrow is based. He can be found talking nonsense on both Twitter and MyIGN.
