Director Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage, The Impossible, and the planned World War Z 2) has been tapped to helm A Monster Calls, an adaptation of the acclaimed Patrick Ness novel.
According to TheWrap, Bayona will direct A Monster Calls before he begins work on the World War Z sequel. 12 Years A Slave’s Bill Pohland and Mitch Horwits, The Crazies’ Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King and Mr. & Mrs. Smith's Patrick Wachsberger will executive produce the film. Pan’s Labyrinth’s Belen Atienza is set to produce.
Bayona calls the source material “the perfect final chapter in a trilogy centered on the extraordinary strength of the mother-child bond.”
Penned by the Ness and illustrated by Jim Kay, A Monster Calls has won a number of prestigious awards. Lionsgate has also been working on adapting Ness' Chaos Walking trilogy for the screen.
TheWrap describes the book as a "visually spectacular drama about a young boy who attempts to deal with his mother's illness and the bullying of his classmates by escaping into a fantastical world of monsters and fairy tales that deal with courage, loss and faith.”
A Monster Calls is slated for a 2016 release.
