Every month, a slew of new graphic novels and trade collections hit the shelves and it can be hard to know which ones are worth your time and hard-earned bucks. That's why, we here at IGN, decided to selflessly comb through the stacks and piles of books to find the true gems, the books that need to be read.
Here they are, our picks for February's Best Graphic Novels!
By R.J. Ryan and David Marquez | Archaia
More an experience than a graphic novel, The Joyners in 3D is something you just need to see, hold and read. It's the kind of comic that makes a case for print; it's a brilliantly designed hardcover that'll make you swoon. It's a visual masterpiece, haunting and dark, filled with starling imagery and razor-sharp writing. Oh, and it's in 3D. If you think you know David Marquez's art style, think again. The man produces incredibly-smooth minimalist pages here. There's an absence of color, but like it's story, things aren't just black and white. If we were giving an award for best looking graphic novel, this book would be an early contender. Stunning stuff from start to finish. The Joyners in 3D is rich, detailed and beautiful. Don't miss it.
By Chris Sims, Chad Bowers and Scott Kowalchuk | Oni Press
“Fearless” Chuck Fairlane has to punch his way through an army of mascots. Down. Set. Fight! is ridiculous, a story that seems to have been born from a pun of a title. However, once you start to read it, you realize there's some much more going on. Surprisingly complex and heartfelt, this graphic novel is a great read that fully embraces its insane premise. Chris Sims and Chad Bowers deliver the goods and keep you hooked in the unlikeliest of stories. In a sea of superhero tales and grim reboots, this comic is breath of fresh air. Artist Scott Kowalchuk is awesome, as well. His jagged cartooning is exactly what this book calls for, and the man is a superb storyteller. Down. Set. Fight! is not just one of the best graphic novels to come out in February, it's one of the best books in recent memory.
By Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli | Vertigo
DMZ has been getting a lot of attention lately, mainly because of the in-development TV show. If you've never experienced this fantastic Vertigo series, the deluxe edition is the way to go. Volume 1 collects the first twelve issues in one sturdy, well-produced hardcover. It's a hearty serving that you can really spend time digging into. DMZ is a thick story, one that deserves this kind of deluxe treatment. The tale of a war-torn New York City has never looked or felt better. Burchielli's artwork looks especially great on the thick, low-gloss paper. There's a gritty feel to the book that suits the story contained on its pages. DC should really take a cue from it's Vertigo wing and produce more hardcovers like this.
By Jonathan Hickman, Jim Cheung, Jerome Opena, Dustin Weaver and Various Artists | Marvel Comics
When reading a Jonathan Hickman comic, it's common to think, “This will read better in a trade.” Infinity is a testament to that. Marvel's big space opera was tons of fun, but it was easy to get lost as the story jumped from multiple monthly titles. This hardcover collects everything you need to experience the event storyline, including issues of New Avengers and Avengers. Plus, tons of sweet art from guys like Jerome Opena and Dustin Weaver. It's a bit pricey, but if you are fan of what Hickman has been doing on the Avengers titles, this massive hardcover is the kind of thing you need on your bookshelf.
By Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez | IDW Publishing
All good things must come to an end. Locke & Key was stunning, a brilliant series in every respect. It even managed to stick the landing, which is no small feat given the scope and emotions tied up in this story. IDW Publishing has done a beautiful job with these hardcovers, each volume is a work of art. Gabriel Rodriguez is a superstar, illustrating this thing to perfection. Joe Hill is a masterful writer, weaving a complex tale of keys, family and loyalty into a gorgeously structured narrative. If you haven't read this series, you need to correct that right now. It's absolutely worth your attention and now that it's all collected in this fantastic hardcovers, you have no excuse. We'll miss you Locke & Key. Thanks for the good times.
