Frozen Hits $1 Billion at Box Office

Disney’s Frozen is expected to cross the $1 billion mark in worldwide box office takings today. It’s the 18th film to hit $1 billion worldwide, seven of which belong to Disney.

As of this weekend estimates peg Frozen’s box office totals at $388.7m in the US and a further $611.5m in international receipts, for a combined haul of just over $1 billion.

Frozen, the highest-grossing original animated film ever, is only the second animated film to hit $1 billion, after Pixar’s all-conquering Toy Story 3.

The remaining Disney films that have also exceeded $1 billion in box office earnings include The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, and the second and fourth instalments in the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

Frozen is nominated for two Oscars tonight; one for for Best Animated Feature and the other for Best Original Song (“Let It Go”). You can keep track of the results here.
