Marvel Comics held a press call, led by Marvel PR man Chris D'Lando, to discuss the upcoming Inhuman comic book with writer Charles Soule and editor Nick Lowe. Inhuman #1 will hit on April 2.
Inhuman spins out of the end of last year's Infinity event where Inhuman King Black Bolt, under attack from Thanos, detonated the floating city of Attilan. The true purpose was not to destroy Thanos, but to unleash Terrigen Mists across the planet that would transform anyone with Inhuman genes into a super-powered being. Blackbolt escaped, but is believed dead by everyone, including his queen Medusa, who now rules the Inhumans.
Soule's story in Inhuman, which is being drawn by Joe Madureira, will follow the Inhuman survivors as well as the new Inhumans that have been popping up around the globe. There are a lot of juicy tidbits about the upcoming series, but the thing that has us most excited is new character Reader. Just wait until you read what he's all about!
What follows is a full transcription of the entire press call. Read through and let us know in the comments what you think of Marvel's commitment to making Inhumans the next big thing.
Chris D'Lando: Charles, you mentioned before in previous interviews that you love the Inhumans and that they're some of your favorite characters. So what is it really like to get to add to that mythology? Inhumans are very secretive. There's such a rich, dense history there, so what's it like to get to add to that?
Charles Soule: Well, frankly, working on any title for Marvel adds to it, right? You're adding to this deep, dense mythology. Specifically with respect to the Inhumans, they are almost a mythological creation in and of themselves -- the way they work, the way they operate, the fact that they're royalty -- and they've always been involved with a lot of the big cosmos events that Marvel has done. So typically they've typically been seen in that vein, as a royal family who appears as part of big, huge Marvel events or cosmic stories, that sort of thing. In this let's us do a lot more with the concept and do some really interesting things.
The Inhumans, just as an idea -- the idea that you were an ordinary horseman until you were exposed to this catalyst that is a very rare element -- is a neat idea in and of itself. Then taking it into the Inhuman series, well, that almost becomes a random thing. You could be someone walking along the streets of New York City -- if you're in New York City -- and then the next thing you know a cloud comes, and you're life is changed forever. I think it's fascinating. It lets me play with both sides of the Inhuman equation, which is the high-level royal family stuff as well as the street-level approach to the Inhumans, which I don't think we've ever seen before.
D'Lando: Very, very true. They have such a rich mythology, and getting to add that is cool. So what's it like to get to add that with someone like Joe Mad, who is so high-profile and is turning in some really gorgeous pages which we've sent around today?
Soule: So you guys now know that he is doing incredible work. He clearly likes Medusa's hair. I'm no artist, but I would probably like to draw that too. You know, it's wonderful. I think Joe Mad is one of the best concept design guys in the business, and he has done such legendary work in the past that for me being the writer who's working with him on this project is -- it still just kind of blows my mind that I'm getting to do some of this stuff and working with someone who's on that caliber of excitement.
Nick Lowe: Yeah, you know, Joe doesn't draw just anything. It has to be something special, and this is one of those special projects. I mean, every few years at Marvel, we like to put a huge focus behind a new property. You saw it years ago when we put Bendis and Finch on Avengers. Even just last year you saw when we put Bendis and McNiven on Guardians of the Galaxy. The Inhumans is the next one, and that's why we've got Joe Mad and Charles Soule, one of our rising stars, coming on it. This is not Charles's first Marvel work, but this is probably his biggest one to date. But you're going to see a lot more coming up from Charles. So these two are really special and doing really special work. We wanted to make sure that all systems were go and that we were loaded for bare on this project, because the Inhumans are really important to us as a company. We've got some really big plans for them.
Soule: Thank you for saying that, Nick. That's heartwarming to hear!
Lowe: [Laughs] Of course, of course.
D'Lando: I also don't think anyone on the call would disagree that Charles is one of the hardest working men in comics these days.
Lowe: Yeah, for sure! Oh my God, he writes a book that comes out every single day, right Charles?
Soule: Yep, every single day. I'm writing three books right now, on this call. [Laughs]
D'Lando: You mentioned Medusa, and you mentioned Joe Mad drawing her. Personally, for me -- I love Medusa. Seeing her come out of Infinity and Inhumanity, she's lost much, whether it's Black Bolt or her whole kingdom, so to speak. We really see her in the Inhumanity issues sort of step up and try to take the reins for the royal family. Where are we going to see her at the start of Inhuman?
Charles: Right. Well, Medusa has turned out to be a fascinating character to write. She is essentially a queen almost in exile, or someone who has been removed from certainly her power base -- I mean, her husband. Medusa can stand very well on her own, but at the same time, having Black Bolt there to offer a second opinion on things is not a bad thing to have. She doesn't have that anymore. A large portion of the population of Attilan has vanished, as part of the amazing Infinity event.
There are all these new threats that are popping up. I mean, Attilan itself blew up at the end of Infinity, and pieces of it were raining down on New York City, so she is trying to simultaneously pull together whatever little pieces of Attilan she can. She's trying to locate her husband Black Bolt and figure out why the heck he unleashed the Terrigen Mist in the first place -- because he didn't explain it, it just happened. So she assumes there's a reason for that; she doesn't know what it was. She is trying to deal with emerging threats from brand new Inhumans, as well as many Inhumans that were in human factions around the globe, kind of hidden. She's got a lot on her plate, and she's dealing with it with great skill, but it's not easy.
D'Lando: You mentioned that Black Bolt didn't explain his plan to her. He doesn't seem like the type of guy who would explain his plans.
Lowe: He rarely explains anything! And if he does, you don't want to be anywhere near it.
D'Lando: So how do you and Charles both see her as a leader moving forward, especially with the Inhumans so splintered?
Lowe: Well, Medusa is a huge part with this book. She's a queen, but she's also a warrior queen. One of the things that we wanted to do in this series was take these characters and amplify them as superheroes, but also as characters that you can relate to. So both of these things come through in spades, especially in Inhuman #1, and #2 as well. As you see it, she is a woman who is dealing with a huge amount of loss and a huge amount of pressure and expectation on her. But she also does it by kicking some ass. I think some of the coolest parts of this book are getting to see Charles and Joe play with her power set and just have her unload on -- you know, we've got some new characters, both to fight with her and for her to fight against. I don't think people are going to really know what hit them when they read this book and they see how cool Medusa is. I think people really underestimate her and underestimate these characters, and we're going to blow the doors off with this book.
D'Lando: You both have mentioned new characters, and we've now got thousands of Inhumans popping up -- you mentioned factions, which we'll get into in a little bit -- but I know you guys have a new character showing up very early in the first issue named Lash, who we'll meet. From my understanding, he's a new antagonist. Can you talk a little about him, about his power set and motivation and where we are with Lash?
Soule: Absolutely. Lash is an Inhuman. He is one of those hidden Inhumans, who is not part of the royal family. He did not live on Attilan. He is basically emerging into the light now as a result of the events in Infinity, particularly the release of the Terrigen Cloud. So he lives in a city that we saw in Infinity called Orollan, which was where Thane, son of Thanos, was found. Basically, that society is one of the things that I've been developing in the series a little bit so far. The idea was that that city only has one tiny splinter of Terrigen Crystal, which meant it couldn't do the Terrigenesis ritual that Inhumans go through at maturity to sort of figure out what their powers are going to be. People of Orollan had to be very, very selective about it and could only grant that to people they thought would get good powers. So it was almost more of a religious thing for them, more than it was just a part of Inhuman life.
So now that Terrigen Mists are circulating around the world and any Tom, Dick and Harry with Inhuman genetic code can go through Terrigenesis, he finds that to be blasphemy and heretical. So what he is doing is essentially travelling the world and trying to do what he can to stop that heresy and to bring things back in line with how he thinks Terrigenesis should be approached in the world. He's a very tough dude. He might be a little even of a Native American-aesthetic character. His powers enable him to basically change energy from one form to another; so if you hit him with a blast of fire, he could turn that into light. He's a very wiley antagonist, and he's very smart. He's also very driven and dedicated. He's someone who, like with the best villains, believes that he is right, believes that what Black Bolt did was a terrible mistake, that it's going to ruin Inhumanity all across the world. He's doing what he can to stop it.
Lowe: Lash also looks super cool. The design that Joe Mad did for him just looks unbelievable. I think he's going to blow some people away. He's a pretty fascinating character. Your heroes are always measured by your villains, and Medusa is going to get measured in a very large way off of Lash, because he is a certified badass.
Soule: Yeah, he's very cool. Badass: check!
