The Jungle Book Casts Idris Elba as the Villainous Shere Khan

Actor Idris Elba (Pacific Rim, Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, Thor: The Dark World) has been cast as the antagonist Shere Khan in Disney’s The Jungle Book.

Deadline reports that Elba will play the villainous bengal in the live-action/VFX hybrid film, with VFX overseen by Academy Award-winner Rob Legato (Avatar, The Wolf of Wall Street, Hugo, The Titanic).

Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Cowboys & Aliens) will direct the film, and is joined by another Iron Man alum on the project, David Lowery, who will be heading the story team (which includes seven full-time illustrators).

Warner Bros. is similarly trying to adapt the public domain tale, but has yet to find a director after Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu left the project. Ron Howard was most recently mentioned for that project.

Disney’s The Jungle Book is slated for an October 9, 2015 release.
